UNIT 5
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
(Writing Cause and Effect Essay)
The Face of Beauty   Diane Ackerman
Summary:-
This essay tells about the role and important of beauty that how more beautiful and handsome people do better in personal, academic, cultural and other aspects of life. Philosopher Aristotle pointed out that beauty is far greater than skin beauty. Attractive people do better in school, get higher score in achievement tests and get more love and supports of others. There is less chance to get punishment in school but there is greater chance to be successful and rewarded.
In the fairy tales, heroes and heroines are presented as handsome and beautiful people and witch and other wicked people are shown as ugly ones. This makes readers to evaluate them as good and bad impression. Again, handsome or beautiful people have to stay in prison less than ugly ones and get shorter sentence. The study of 1968 has proved that the people (group) who were given cosmetic surgery were hardly to return back to prison than other.
This is the age of glamour and beauty. In the offices or institutions more beautiful or handsome figures are selected from similar CV quality. Not only this even parent like to spend more time and offer much love, dedication, and affection to cute children than ugly ones. There is good care, attention, encouragement, praises to beautiful figures (persons) from adults and grown of people. Again, a man’s personality becomes better and more intelligent when he is with more beautiful girl has got marriage with such cute figures. Other people evaluate as a successful person with cheerful and beautiful life partner. Helen, Cleopatra are some counted most beautiful women of the world’s history who have not only become the matter of pray and satisfaction but also have become a violent power and cause of destruction.
Another study of 17,000 men shows that the height people with at least six feet tall did much better, earned much more money, promoted faster and became more successful than the shorter ones. So, there is miracle in beauty of human being that becomes a real tool of getting love, affection, support and care or punishment and hatred all together.
a) When you were a child, you were a little overweight. One day at school, you were teased and called fat by some of your classmates. If you could go back in time, what would you say to the children who teased you? What would you do about their behavior yourself?
There are different types of people physically, mentally or other ways. No two persons can be the exact same in all cases. If I were teased a lot being 'fat' by my school friends and I could go back to that state now, I would say and respond different ways to them. My present dealing with them would be totally different from what I did in past.
At first, I would take whatever remarks or comments they made about me positively. I would try to be perfect in my study, thinking and other aspects. Sometimes I would be separate from those who over teased me. But always escaping from the problem couldn't be possible. If I was called Oh fatty! Oh Buffalo, I would just take as normal way. If I was in my private dealing with other people, I would show little bit angry gesture to such teasers. Making comment over my body structure would be normal in my thinking because I would focus more to study. I would not pay such serious care to my bodily comments. When I got such comment, I would tell them "What could you get in making such gentle comment? Anyway you are handsome/ beautiful too much. I am not greedy over that".
No doubt, I would never be such violent over the teasing of my classmate. I would rather try myself best to be the best in the study, extracurricular activities, and friendship thinking that my fatness was nothing. Moreover, I would have contact with all teachers too close that I would hardly get and negative remarks from those students in front of teachers in my real school days I used to be violent and fought with many regarding my body structure. Actually, if I got chance to go back in that state I would behave in such positive and loving any that would discourage then to tease me anymore. I have known that positive thinking and positive taking of any problems can be easy journey of life. I would think that "fatness" wouldn't be big problem because there could be thousands of positive aspects in my life.
b)  You suspect that your teenaged daughter (or sister) has the beginning of an eating disorder. You know there is lot of pressure at her high school to be very thin. How would you deal with the situation?
I have to apply more creative and constructive strategy to solve/curb this problem of my sister. My teenaged sister has eating disorder that doesn't like to have regular food and does not care much to have junk foods. Again, there is great pressure from her high school to be very thin is totally wrong. To be very thin or fat shouldn't our body structure anyway. This does not mean that we must be over slim by any cost.
I would like to have creative discussion with my sister. I should say her "you are becoming thinner and thinner day by day. If you are going to be so, some physical weakness may occur with you." I tell this to her in polite and convincing way. If she is doing (becoming) so due to great pressure from school, I go to school and talk with school authority about what is the significance of using such system. I will tell them that I am educated, careful, and capable to handle my sister's physical condition.
When I suggest to my sister I should encourage her to read the books that contain healthy habits, good health and healthy life. I should motivate her to do such activities that she will be much careful about how to maintain good health. If problem is unsolved, I should bring her to nice check up to forcefully.
c) Is there a universal idea of beauty? What does a physically attractive woman look like? What does a handsome man look like?
"Beauty lies in the eyes of Beholder" is a universal statement that tries to give the definition: positive outlook finds rose into stone while negative view finds stone into rose. This means, there is no such hard and fast model of beauty or beautiful as such but it is the observation or perception of others. Again, this matter of beauty or ugly is the matter of cultures and religious viewpoints. Individual experience and tastes are the main ways of evaluating beauty. Someone beautiful thing or person can't be beautiful because it is a relative not absolute one.
In normal thinking a woman with big eyes, tall body, long thick hair, shinning skin, long limbs, etc. is considered to be the beautiful woman. In different societies such women are selected. Such characteristics can be the measuring rod to beauty. In the same way the beauty of male is also determined by some characteristics. If the body structure is fitted with more muscle, thick eyebrows, narrow hip, broad shoulders, height, etc. he is called an attractive or handsome man. As males evaluate females as beautiful on the basis of some characteristics so do females to males on the basis of some characteristics.  But the cultural thinking and concept for beautiful and handsome are different for country to country. Along with beauty we can find more compassion, affection, tenderness, politeness, loving attitude, etc. are found in females. Males are normally brave, bold, angry little bit violent type.
On the basis of above presented description, we can identify and categorize to the males and females as an attractive men and beautiful women. Their some general characteristics become the identity tools for their beautifulness and handsomeness.
d) What remedies are there in our society for people who are considered or who consider themselves unattractive?
There are, generally, two types of our looks to people either attractive or beautiful etc. or unattractive or ugly etc. In this 21st modern and fashionable world skin deep beauty has become a demand of everybody. The primary attraction goes to quantity not the quality persons. While talking about unattractive, there comes internal or external unattractiveness of a person.
To make person externally attractive from the unattractive state we can adopt number of medicinal and others remedies. We can follow various kinds  of cosmetics, skin care, facials, face wash, plastic surgery, use of number of creams like fair and handsome, fair and teen, fair an lovely, Saka, etc. Again regular yoga and other exercise along with nutritious balance diet may bring positive impact in our beauty. No doubt, being attractive and beautiful is not the matter of loss rather a number of profits will be on the queue in this glamorous world. To maintain physical fitness is one of the challenging as well as inevitable demands of present world people.

On the other hand to be attractive and beautiful is not only the matter of skin-deep beauty. Lack of self-stem and self-respect in term of qualities and positive aspects of person can be next cause of being unattractive one. We should maintain the self-worth personality so that we can be happy, satisfied and cheerful in our life. What others think about you should be taken, as a minor thing rather what we think ourselves about us is very important aspect. Lack of compliments from others sometimes becomes minor rather the main aspect is how you put/ stand yourself and think about you, your selfconfidence satisfaction independence, positive outlook and habit of finding beauty withincan be some of the remedies of unattractive people. After all we have to say “beauty lies in the eyes of beholder” is key to maintain ourselves.
Thus, we have to change our outlook to ourselves and to others and try to find out a number of items from the mine within. This thinking or looking perspective is required very much at present. A dark and unattractive lady becomes attractive angel to a handsome fair guy and unattractive man can be fitted partner to the most beautiful categorized woman from the formula of internal beauty and matter of self-satisfaction.
e) What do you think could be done to change the way prospective employers and others in society treat people who are not very attractive?
Great Nepali literary figure Parijat said “Man to be happy is like a room without curtain”. The curtain less room seems unattractive so people are hardly satisfied what they have. No doubt, in this commercial and glamorous world skin-deep beauty becomes for time being dominant thing. Various private institutions employees are rejected being unattractive and selected being attractive without quality.
There is predominant thinking in our society to the skin-deep beauty as the first privatized things. But it should be abolished and can be done gradually. If someone is attractive and with quality, she becomes more qualified naturally. If one is physically ugly enough but she has cultivated self-confidence, quality, caliber, etc. she also can be beautiful and selective candidate. Again we should change our negative outlook to ugly figure. All passerby’s see a blooming rose but no one cares about tattered one behind the bush. It is human selfish and shortsighted nature. We should change our outlook that there is ample capacity to do carious works in so-called unattractive people. We also should think that skin unattractive people. We also should think that skin beauty is elusive and may deceive you as well.
No doubt, no one can be evergreen in beauty and attraction. By the passage of time and growing up age one becomes ugly and non-attractive who was once called the most attractive person. We should have positive outlook equally to all beautiful (attractive) and non-attractive people. Sometimes, wearing nice dresses, taking care of beauty, regular checkup regular exercises, balance diet, regular keen attention to sound health can be some of the remedies to overcome this problem. Last but not the least we can say that beauty is, eventually, a matter of looking depends on the eyes of beholder.

 Discrimination against Handicapped people
Losing a leg, a hand or eyesight or a voice or any part of body is not losing whole life. Our social structure and concept towards disable (handicapped) people is totally negative. People can be handicapped mentally or physically that should be treated well instead. Normally, such disable people are neglected, disqualified, ridiculed, not given love and support by so-called unhandicapped people. There is a compulsion of changing this negative attitude towards disabled people because the effect will be in individuals, in the families, in communities and ultimately in the country and the world.
Biologically, a person may have disability in hearing (deafness) disability in speaking having no eyesight, having no legs or hands or having no clear voice or having babbling voice, etc. are some types of disabled handicapped people. When the society, government, unhandicapped people, etc. have negative attitudes and behavior to them they are discriminated a lot. A deaf person is not selected in speaking and listening programs. Having no limb(s) may create problem in getting works done daily and any job as well. More problematically, the complete blind has such plight in daily activities in roaming here and there and engaging is service, we so called unhandicapped people always look them down and feel superior to ourselves. For this we should give equal priority to handicapped and non-handicapped people equally and start to behave positively and in supportive way.
Any type of discrimination against handicapped people is too much sensitive thing because the negative effect of individual affects the whole nation. A blind can’t cross the road go toilet and other walking activates properly where he needs help. Having no any part of body (leg or hand) can’t work well as having all part of body. Physically handicapped persons have mental creative and constructive caliber that should be promoted. But, when the handicapped people are rejected, dominated, discriminated and badly treated they lose their confidence. They also have desires, hopes, aims or mission, in life, if we support, love and encourage them, they can meet their goals and become successful; if not, they are killing their zeal. Their enthusiasm, interest and light of hope will slowly dim.
These discriminate scenes to handicapped starts from home, spreads to school community and all arena of our life. Disable people can’t get proper respects, care from teachers and students at school, no good attitude and supports in community. We can see a number of successful handicapped people in the world. We should encourage them to be some familiar and successful person in the life. Great literary figure John Milton was blind; Helen Killer was blind and deaf at 2 years old. American scientist Thomas Edison was deaf and so many others are there. We should always encourage these handicapped people but not to be discouraged in any cost to make them successful.
All are human beings with equal zeal. Hopes, desires, mission and life. Some people, lacking some aspects of life, are not losing whole life. Handicapped people are also equal are not unhandicapped who can do a lot. First and for most thing is to change the others’ attitudes to handicapped people. This color of discrimination should be rob out right from today if we want to promote their life is particular and develop the nation is general.
g) Many have claimed that the fashion, cosmetics and advertising industries are promoting an impossible standard of beauty on that very few people can meet. What are some possible reasons for their promotion of an unrealistic standard of beauty? What are the effects on people and society?
The standard or the concept of beauty has been changing by the passage of time. Our parents and grandparents concept and view to beauty is totally different from ours. Media has been corporative and handling this whim of beauty in various ways. Unlike in past, there should be slim body silky hair, white-seated teeth, clear face, height body for some demanded aspects to a beautiful woman. Similarly, media focus on tall, height, well-built body structure with muscle and thick eyebrow and clean face for some requirement to be a handsome man.
Media industries and various costementics industries are keenly dedicated to create and impossible standard of beauty. There is one to one relation between fashion industries and media industries. In Hollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood everywhere there is very much deep impact of fashion and glamorous beauty. Now the natural skin beauty and body state is totally rejected. We hardly find the people who are totally stuck o natural beauty. More or less people are lured by fashion and glamorous beauty. Now the natural skin beauty and body state is totally rejected. We hardly find the people who are totally stuck o natural beauty. More or less people are lured by fashion concept of beauty.
The cosmetics industries, fashion, advertisement industries have been presenting the concept or figures of beauty that is not real for almost all. Very few people meet that type of beauty. What is pretended as so called “beauty’ ‘perfection’, ‘model of beauty’ which is more unreal, and less real one? Large percentages of people aren’t addressed by them. This measurement of beauty and presentation of beauty by above-mentioned agencies is totally narrow. Glamorous world has affected the entire world. There is must tension not having white straight teeth, no clear face, long hair, etc. the industrial advertisements are appealing people to be bear and to be attached with them one way or the other.
The fashion cosmetics and advertising industries have direct impact on people and society in various ways. Now direct impact on people and society in various ways. Now people have concept that beauty is not that thing we naturally, have got we have to buy a number accessories and tools to make ourselves beautiful or handsome. Most importantly, the psychology of people has been modified by these areas, a lot, there is such preconception that ‘perfect’ person can never become without using various cosmetic products. This means there is direct negative effect on the people and standard of society regarding this concept of ‘beauty’. Our social structure, relation of people within society and our day-to-day life is directly affected by cosmetic things and advertising industries. They are more negative and pervasive impacts whereas les degree of positive and construction one.
h) Recently, a well-known female opera singer was fired from a production because the opera company said that she was too fat to fit into her costume. Some years ago a broadcast new reporter was fired for not being sufficiently attractive. Do employers have the right to demand that their employees fit a stereotyped notion of attractiveness if the employees are, in all other aspects, good at their jobs? Is it different for different occupation? If so, give examples.
There is no any human being who does not like a blooming rose but prefers a stone. Beauty is inspiring thing to all. “Beautiful is good” “Attractive is selected” etc. statements are accepted by all people. This is the world whatever is important is beauty. In various job institutions employers are discriminated while selecting them and discriminated while behaving with them and paying to them.
Whatever the case is and whatever types\ of employment institutions and employers are, there is no legal right to discriminate the employees on the basis of beauty. There should not be a stereotyped (fixed) notion or attractiveness in selecting employees, if the persons are perfect, at home and confident regarding the work. This is ever happening phenomena but it shouldn’t be and it is illegal. In hiring staffs or candidates ‘beauty’ or ‘attractiveness’ become the key factor though quality and caliber of person is very low.
No doubt, there are ample of sector where the clear picture of discrimination and kick out to the employees can be seen. If physically fitted he is selected if he is unfitted, ugly and less attractive he is kicked out from the job is an authoritarian attitude of employers. In the shows modeling and entertaining areas the beautiful or attractive figures are highly demanded. Again, in job interview, practical education, singing dancing, judgment there is thick color of discrimination of beauty. Airlines, hotels, mostly in restaurants there is necessarily beautiful and attractive people are selected. Not question of selecting attractive people but question is why to kick out to one who is perfect, well and smart at work despite of his/ her beauty. Sometimes quality should be treated more to beauty.
Since business (all types of employment) is public area, beauty is major factor. We can’t deny the go of the world that beauty attract to all. The demand of time, costumers and places we can’t go against it but it is totally illegal to throw away the employee who was fitted and perfect beforehand but too fat too how. But this treatment is different is different sectors not the same
i) Since the use of student evaluation as a valid measure of teaching quality. If students do indeed discriminated based on attractiveness should school eliminate teaching evaluation, or at least, give them les importance?
The best solution of this problem is strongly following the second solution “giving them less importance’, ‘do not discriminate on the basis of beauty’. Education is such an institution by which all types of problems are solved. It is the best profession of the world. But we can see some less qualified and less known people undermine the supreme value of education. Actually, no any institution can have as much significance that of education. Evaluation is one interrelated aspect of finding teaching quality.
Like other walks of life there is question of effect of beauty in practical teaching evaluation of students or not. If the teaching quality is evaluated on the basis of beauty and attractiveness, it is too bad. Some cases can be so in our day-to-day life. But this process is not good and respected method of evaluating quality teaching or education of a person. We educated. People should not be lured by beauty as other sectors employers do we do have ethics of education morality, discipline and idealistic attitude of life. Though some people evaluate educated life in comparison with money and wealth, it is too bad. Education is separate discipline.
To wipe out the confusions and problems of discrimination in measure of teaching quality, there should not be any bad attitude in education. Educated people should fallow the morality and truth so that they should not give focus to quantity rather to quality. Except some rare case there is no and shouldn’t be discrimination in measuring the totality teaching on the basis of beauty. Whatever is happening so far, we should adopt second option strongly. We should give beauty and attractiveness less focus. The main focus should be given to talent, capacity, quality and performance, etc.
j) Write a letter to the editor of Rising Nepal about now public streets roads in Kathmandu are being used for draining sewage. Suggest solutions for controlling the problem.
24th August, 2009
Kirtipur, Kathmandu
The Editor,
The Rising Nepal,
Kathmandu
Subject: About the misuse of roads in Kathmandu
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction regarding the misuse of public streets in the city of Kathmandu. I would like to inform the concerned authority about the serious condition and problems caused by the pollution by using you media.
The streets in Kathmandu are being used for draining sewage. This problem can even be seen in the major areas of the city and most of the populated cities. This problem is making the city of Kathmandu increasingly polluted. People not only have to resist the bad smell corning form sewage but also have risk of catching many kinds of communicable diseases. We can see piles of waste sewage stored on the open roads, nooks and corners. In many paces the sewage from the drainage line is openly flowing on to the main roads. This season and the surrounding. Through your daily newspaper “The Rising Nepal” I would like to draw the attention the local government towards this problem and its adverse effects. I would also like to point out some solutions to this problem. The old drainage pipes should be replaced by the leak proof pipes, the local authority should check the pipelines time to time. The drainage pipes should be managed properly and should be put away from public places. Similarly, the waste management by the city should be made more efficient. The sewage should be property disposed.
I hope that you will publish this article on your upcoming publication of your newspaper concerned on the general public of Kathmandu stressing about this problem and its solutions.
Yours truly,
Babina
