UNIT 2
CHERRIES FOR MY GRANDMA
(Writing a descriptive Essay)
Summary:-
In this speech the author. Geoffrey
Canada has presented the poverty of his family and Sacrifice and dedication
from his mother and grandmother. His mother used to go for work, though there
was low pay. He says even if people talk easily how to come out of poverty but
it takes great sacrifice and struggle to come out of poverty. Because of
poverty his mother used to make clothes herself. With her low alary she used to
care for four sons. Mother gave up her college study for the nourishment of her
sons. Poverty made them to celebrate Christmas with tears. His mother
sacrificed a lot for her sons still she was not able to fulfill their demands.
Some Americans told that due to lack of moral values there is poverty but
having morality with mother and grandmother there was poverty in writer’s home.
When the writer was studying in high
school, he was not responsible to parent and responsibilities. His grandmother
used to care other’s children to earn some money and used to sell some beauty
products as well. Grandmother also did a great sacrifice in the family so he
remembers her as a beautiful kind and intelligent woman. There was very deep
love and understanding in writer’s family. Grandmother taught him to feel
dignity and respect in poverty. For the spiritual love material things and
popery didn’t matter.
Cherries were favorite fruits to
grandmother so the writer and grandmother secretly bought them. He used to go
to a mile away to buy cherries. Grandmother loved the cherries Grandmother
loved the cherries most though they were very much expensive. The writer remembered
in his college study time about the values and sacrifice done by grandmother.
He realize how much investment, love, and dedication his parents had upon his
upbringing. The writer imagined if he bought a box of cherries and offered to
his grandma with his first salary after his graduation. That would be her
excitement with his little surprising gift. But he lost his grandmother in
coming year that made his dream and imagination collapsed.
Talking about poverty he says it is
very much tough dedicated job to come out of poverty. Whole life they try to be
out of poverty climbing the ladder still, they can’t be out of the poverty. He
hope he would carry his little secret gift in heaven and he has got a lot about
life and skills of living from her teaching.
a) Can a short encounter with someone
have as great as impact on a long term relationship? If so give an example and
explain. If not, why not?
Our life a type of meeting and
separation with different types of people. We are careless or we don’t have
always good impression of all people. But sometimes a short encounter with
someone can really have an influence like long relationship. Time is waiting to
none so with time we forget everybody and everything. But some short encounter
with someone can be memorable and influencing for whole life.
I failed in the SLC board exam
because I was very sick. I had thought my life was already meaningless. While I
was in a great tension, my classmate Sita came and tried to convince me. She
had already completed SLC in good first division. Though I could score first
division I would not do good exam because I had suffered from division I would
not do good exam because I had suffered from typhoid. Sita convinced me that failure
is sign of success, without having experience of failure we can’t understand
the value of success in our life. She told me I shouldn’t take tension anymore.
I could do well in the coming year. Actually, Sita was teaching me then just
like my teacher or father. I realized her words very much and I stopped
thinking negatively.
In the coming year I took the exam
and I passed with good division. Then I stared to continue my further study
with new interest and hope. My relation was becoming deeper with Sita from the
friendship point of view on the one hand and my rapid progress in study in the
other. Time and again I remember my friend Sita who is studying MBBS. I hardly
forget her those words that made me in present condition. Now I am doing my
bachelor study with good Knowledge and capacity. I am always first and top in
every academic and non-academic subjects. I have regular meeting and talks with
my childhood friend Sita now and again. My progress in study, my personality
and my friendship with Sita are increasing rapidly. The evening I was wailing
for May failure of SLC exam the entrance of Sita in my room and teaching for
fifteen minutes became the bond of love relation and progress for the whole of
my life. So this example of my personal experience can be the base for the
conclusion that a short meeting or encounter with someone has lifelong or long-lasting
relation and influence.
b) According to Geoffrey Canada.
“There are Some Americans who think poverty Stems forma lack of values and
determination.” What do you think? Are people poor because of their own actions
or character?
Poverty can be of different kinds.
Due to economical, mental, personal, social poverty people seem from a lack of
values and determination as some Americans think. When we observe the family of
Geoffrey Canada, his grandmother father mother and his brother, seem dedicate.
The family is full of ethical values and morality taught by grandmother and
mother .If poverty is due to lack of values and determination: When is Geoffrey
Canada’s family never being out of poverty having plenty of values and
determination?
When we observe our society from the
view of Geoffrey Canada’s family, honest and dedicated people are poor. The
values can’t feed the stomach and enables to do many activities in life. No
doubt, we should have value faith, ethics and determination. In my opinion the
poverty is due to laziness, wrong activities, less political influence and
having no strong determination and ego to do something in life. By character,
few people can be poor but thousand people are poor because of either in
actions or wrong actions. National economic policies, government, development
and such other many factors are responsible to be poor and live in poverty but
not mere lack of values ethics determination, etc.
c)
Write a five-paragraph descriptive essay about a childhood
relationship with a person who has had a powerful influence over you. Give
specific examples and detailed descriptions of things you did together and

Grandmother: Backbone of my life:
I have got a number of different
influences of different people in my life but the most productive and helpful
influence is of my dearest grandmother. Now I don’t have my grandmother anymore
but she started to shape my life and personality form my childhood up to my
boyhood. When I was small, chubby child she used to tell me various types of
stories and fairy tales.
I had hardly any chance to sit on the
lap of stories my mother because mostly I used to be cared by my grandmother.
She was physically of medium height with wrinkled face. She was wearing Nepali dress that influence
me a lot. When I was spending my childhood she always assisted me to be enjoyed
and cheerful. She told me a number of fairy tales that has strong impact with
me now. She would bring me here and there sometimes to temples. She was ever
ready to feed me meals, care of my problems and offer the love and affection.
I remember now, I had spent a
heavenly life with my dearest grandmother Alas! I don’t have now. When I was
doing my schooling my grandmother was the real teacher. She would always make me ready to go to
school, manage tiffin, school uniform and so and so on .Moreover, my
grandmother used to teach me different good manner. She would tell me shouldn’t
be sad in life labor is the key to success optimistic thinking makes one
successful in one’s life reading and learning are the best works , etc. Such
types of moralities were taught me by loving grandma again and again. I
couldn’t understand the value of deeds done upon me by my grandmother until I
missed her for forever.
When I completed my school education
and started my career along with higher study I really understood the
significance of the role of my grandmother bachelor study along with other
career. Now my mind is time and again, struck by the memories of my
grandmother. It is too late. I realized the dedication and sacrifice done by my
grandmother upon me. I have already lost her but her memories are living in my
mind. Who I am now and what I am doing
possible by the inspiration and dedication of my grandmother.
Now I felt that the spiritual love
and true affection that my dearest grandmother invested upon my childhood and
boyhood was the greatest investment done upon me in my life. I promise very
confidently that I won’t erase the low. Impression and stamp of her affection
done on the papers of my mind. I will ever miss and memorize her until my last
breath as the most influencing figure thought I can’t experience by sight to
her in my life any longer.
d. Imaging that you left your native
country to start life in a new country. Write a later back home describing your
new surroundings and how they have affected you.
Tokyo,
Japan
August 20,
2009
Dear parents
Daily bow from your son Reshav from
far away land. Japan. How are you spending your days? For me let’s say it is
everything going well. It is the greatest achievement to be away from one’s
parents and struggling in new situation and environment.
Father. When I came here last month I
amazed a lot how to adjust in very strange environment and with unique people.
I felt lonely, isolated, support- less and like parents les. It was natural for
me because beside study and books I didn’t have anyone to support and care
here. Mother used to care me and do everything for me while I was in Nepal.
Timely, I have remembered you and missed you a lot. I faced the problems with
new climate, new language to communicate unique people to deal with at the
beginning. But slowly I adjusted with them all.
Mother, I used to be much happier to
stay with you and give a lot of tensions and demands with you. Now I could
realize how much I gave you the problem. But the good thing I have got now is
my independency. I am able to do all the works that is necessary to me. Again,
the knowledge of new people and places, cultures and development have made my
mental horizon widened. I am much more confident and hopeful for life. I also
convince my self-telling that though I have missed my parents for few years, I
will soon live with them. Now nothing difficult I am getting anymore.
Everything is going well. I have learnt a number of skills and ideas of
successful life living in Japan and looking Japanese people.
Thus, be much pleased that your son
is doing well for himself for his parents and lastly, for the development of
the country. Now foreign country and environment have become my good friends.
So don’t do any tension about me. I have been doing my study well and doing my
best to achieve my goal though there are some problems on the process.
Yours loving Son

e. Write a descriptive essay. Think
of a place that has special meaning for you. Describe it and influence on you.
Kirtipur: My paradise
The motherland that begot me could be the
significant one but the nurtured land has become the most significant to me
that is Kirtipur on capital city of Nepal. In the process of getting higher
education I was reborn from the soil of Kirtipur that has become my second
parents, teachers and many more. The love and affection of that virgin land has
been written with permanent color in my heart and mind that unrobable and is
unforgettable.
I respect my birth place, her ups and
downs, forest, fountain much but I do better to the Kirtipur that has shaped my
life’s career. There a large compound filled with is building, trees lawns and
beauty. When I was tired of work I used to visit her. She would provide me a
freshness and power to do something good. When I was going out of track and I was
not serious about my duty (study) I would feel that every tree and piece of grass
were reminding me are you forgetting your duty? There was nothing as special
but each piece of plant grass and md and stone was filled with my love.
I have got to many inspirations from-
different people and places in my life. Among them the (Positive) impact. Of
Kirtipur with her I had spent only two years was very strong. I am somebody
with my identity now is, I think the result of her inspiration. Because I had
converted my parental love, personal happiness, friendship with that place. I
used to visit her daily and enjoy with her overall beauty. The singing of bird,
virgin environment, non-polluted soil and plants, etc. were the main causes of
my love to Kirtipur.
Now I am away from my dearest land.
But occasionally I make a good visit to her. I become overflow of emotions and
feelings sitting with her and on her lap. If I love somebody and something most
is to my paradise, Kirtipur. The compound of Tribhuvan University which is
attached in seem to me be polluted and discolored day by day. This makes me sad
whatsoever I can forget in my life but I
hardly forget my dearest land Kirtipur that has made me who I am now an my full
identity because my tow golden years were spent on her lap and with her beauty.
f. What are the causes of poverty?
How can people climb out of poverty? Write an essay in which you explain your
ideas on this topic.
Causes and ways out of Poverty
In a simple language poverty is a
condition of being sad, dissatisfied and unable to live comfortable life. Comfortable
life. There are multiple factors of make people feel being poor. Poverty
appears with a person and spreads with country and to the world. Among the
causes of poverty, lack of education and having no any good skill makes people
poor. Again, in there are no chances for jobs, ways of development from the
side of government there occurs poverty. Social, political and economic factors
are the crucial factors of poverty. Talking about an individual laziness,
un-education, dependency being spendthrift can be some causes of poverty. When
natural resources are not used properly but misused and the government is fully
careless of people and their conditions, there is poverty in any nation. People
feel lack of job opportunities, problems of over population and carelessness of
government in poverty. Sometimes black-warded thinking, superstitions,
socio-cultural structures, etc. factors can also be the causes of poverty.
Again lank of dedication to work narrow thinking, lack of unity in family and
relatives also become causes of poverty.
When there are causes of poverty,
there must be some solutions to wipe out the stain of poverty. We have to climb
out of poverty by any cost. Personally everyone should try to be self-dependent
confident and dedicated person to the nation. Hard work, acquiring good
education and thinking your small work as an important job are better
solutions. Everyone should be punctual, hardworking up-to date and struggle
some to be adopted in new and challenging environment. There must be good
political system noble leadership and good governance (ruling) to wipe out the
poverty. Everyone must have good mission to achieve something and along with
goal there must be dedication and optimistic vision. Government must establish
new opportunities, young and skilled mind should be filled with creative and
constructive works. If any country makes its youths to migrate other countries
it is the tragedy of his nation and the brain drain is followed.
To solve the problem of poverty new
industries. Workplaces and constructions should be established. Mentally,
everyone should evaluate oneself and one's work as the best one there must be
harmony, co-operation among family member’s families and the nations as well.
All the citizens should establish themselves as the noble citizens and the
political parties, government should think a lot for country and her
development along with the people living there.
g) Write a descriptive essay about a
place that has affected you a lot and you are well familiar with it.
Kathmandu is abound in both beauties
and dirt. It is in the Central Development Region. As the valley Kathmandu has
many more beauties as well as problems with environment.
Kathmandu is the capital city of
Nepal that has almost all office and ministries. The construction activities
are going on rapidly with new settlements. The density of people living here is
unbearable. Overpopulation, dense settlements, shortage of water and
electricity and un affordable goods, price hike, pollutions money minded people
and direct impact of western cultures have made this holy land a polluted
valley. Despite the ample beauty charms and attraction the glory of city is on
the ware day by day. This has termed the valley a place of dirt and problems.
Again, Kathmandu the capital city is
also a pious land full of temples. It is also called city of temples. Renowned
temples like Pashupati, Swyambhunath, Bauddhnath, etc. have given the
international recognition of Nepal Various Darbarsquares (Kathmandu Bhaktapur
and Patan) have enlivened our history and ancient identity. Besides, Kathmandu
valley does have moderate climatic situation. She has given cool air far away
for suffocative hot. Boarder line of valley with hilly garland has given good
protection. Near and far of this pious land has given good protection. Near and
far of this pious land has many refreshing centers like Nagarkot, Godawari,
kakani, Melamchee, etc. In good utilization and systematic settlement Kathmandu
can be a boon.
With the varsities of possibilities
challenges the life in Kathmandu has become joy as well as of sadness. From
beauty, culture, history, topography etc. the land has become a land of beauty.
Again from the point of view of quality life, freshness of air, clean drinking
water, systematic settlement, etc. there are ample of problem. Thus, Kathmandu
valley has existed and situated with many possibilities with beauties and
attraction. Together it has brought with ample of challenges in living a
quality life.
We have to make maximum utilization
of possibilities available here as well as beware of our destructive activities
done upon it on the one hand and we have challenge of maintaining her ample
beauties as well as to solve the dirt-affected Kathmandu on the other
hand. Both contradictory ideas and
conditions have made Kathmandu on the other hand. Both contradictory ideas and
conditions have made Kathmandu a fragile but attractive valley gifted with
ample beauties and heap of dirt.
