an Advantage and Disadvantages Essay)
You’ve
Got Inappropriate Mail Lisa Guernsey
Summary:-
In
this essay the writer Lisa Guernesy has presented about what are the positive
and negative results in monitoring of employees e-mails in workplaces. Both
‘Yes’ and ‘No’ views are given from different points of views. The system
manager of Ritvik Toy Company, Andrew Quinn starts to monitor (observe)
about various e-mail used by staffs of company. He mails used by them. He found
some are much interested in herbal medicines, next one in sending jokes about
woman driver, and another consulting lottery number and next on sending e-mail
to girlfriends.
When
such monitoring system is applied and informed all workers there is a moral
question raised by people: can this be legal? Such system is dictatorship in
the administration of company. There is a logic from the management side that
there is load in networking system due to overuse and misuse. Other denies and
say there is personal hamper to each worker by this system. The moral question
is: Can a company manager (Management) watch every private part of employees?
If so, sometimes the career can be at danger (risk).
Even
the American Management Association and American Law are not against
monitoring. Since 50% of e-mails used by employees are not related to company’s
works so, such misuse must be controlled anyhow. From economic point, due to
overuse the e-mail server will be damaged time and again. While changing weekly
or monthly it is very expressive as well. There is missed opinions from the
staff of Ritvik Toys Company. Some say it should be monitored while other
denied it shouldn’t be done since it hampers in the individual privacy. It is
not good to know all the private matters and e-mail used by individual. It is
an attack on privacy. Other say to improve and strengthen the quality survive
and system it can be useful as well. Some opine that like television
conversation e-mail should not be monitored because there is no care and check
the telephone talks in the offices or elsewhere. Quinn’s opinion is that there
must be some step further taken is stopping misuses of e-mail and privacy and
property of the company.
a.
How do you respond to Authority? Do you work better when you are supervised when you are left
to work on your own? How do most people work best?
I have positive as well as negative
response to the authority because all authorities might not be bad. Mostly, I
think them negatively. Since they are misusing their power, post I have to
accept and become compelled to bear the authority negatively. When I am
powerless and in low post I have to accept and become compelled to bear the
authority. This is my weakness and a type of crime also. All authorities are
not doing wrong but few counted authorities are doing relatively good still
they are not 100% fair in their attitude in dominating and controlling others.
In general, I respond negatively to the authority.
Everyone wants to be free, love in
free environment and work better and in free situation. One can be confident,
open, talented, and creative and enable to use all potentiality when one is
free from any authority. I 'too' am not exception of this case. I work under
sometime I complete various works within some boundaries and restrictions of
authorities. I can easily achieve my goals and ambitions when I am working
freely. From the administration point of view people don't work properly in
absence of regular monitoring that is not the truth. Such people are doing in
motivation of some body that is wrong. But actual human nature wants freedom in
work as well as other walks of life.
From my personal experience I am to
generalize that most of people work best in open and free environment. I don't
mean that free means without any rules, regulations and boundaries. These sorts
of things are ever there even then we can feel while working. We have performed
our duties and responsibilities but not under someone's desire and personal
domination. There must be a democratic environment, personal choice, individual
freedom but boundary or authority of duties and responsibilities that can be
the best way of working to me as well as I, think, to most of the people.
b. What does the following quote mean?
Do you agree or disagree with it? How does it relate to workplace monitoring?
"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely".
(Lord Acton 1987)
Power is an abstract thing that can
do many more concrete operation. Power holder is known as ruler or powerful
person who hardly uses it but misuses and controls others with it. Until and
unless one reaches on the point of power he become very obedient, polite and
humble but when he turns to be powerful, he is cruel, corrupted and inhuman.
This is the general human nature.
I agree with this quote of Lord Acton
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely". When
a person holds power then he loses his commonsense and starts to think
negatively to others. He does not have place for humanity, feeling and love.
The power makes person to be corrupted and slowly and gradually that power
becomes very strong as an absolute power. Then he hardly thinks about duties
and responsibilities rather tries to rule over other powerless. When persons
reach at the top most power position they are much cruel and plan, do and
create problematic situation. During world Wars and other time of history Hitler,
Mussolini, Napoleon Bonapart, King Gynandra, etc have exercisers of absolute
power.
Power is such thing that mostly leads
people to wrong path and always demands wrong results though doers may have
profits. Again, absolute power is the best way and occasion to do the worst
things. Common people become helpers in
front of absolute power then bow down and start to pray and do according to
order of it. There is no humanity, co-operation, hearing others feeling and
sentiments in the exercise of absolute power.
In conclusion we can say that power
is a thing that leads one to care about personal interest and absolute power is
the condition when one is totally blind about others interests, problems,
sentiments, etc but tries to impose his worst and inhuman authority upon
others. In the arena of history absolute powers have been sooner or later
finished and vanished.

Workplace monitoring
Work without
monitoring can both be good as well as bad. Without monitoring there can be
loopholes of misusing and committing crimes against company or institution
while regular monitoring may hamper the privacy of employer or individual.
Monitoring can have advantages and disadvantages but it is in relation to its
uses.
There are
several advantages of monitoring within the workplace. For the management it is
a good chance to identify the misusers and non-supportive employees of the
company (Workplace). Again, economically too, it is a matter of direct
advantage to the employers because there can be regular checkup whether the
works are run smoothly or not. To mobilize all employees on the right track and
in accordance to the benefit of workplace, monitoring becomes a strong weapon.
Another advantage is the matter of secret plan, future actions and destination
of the workplace because there is regular supervision of misuse or illegal. To
make all employees privacy alert to work properly so that workplace will step
on to progress. But, the individuality of employees and privacy is in question
in this monitoring system in the workplace.
Although the
advantages of workplace monitoring directly go to employers and least and
indirectly go to employees. There are many disadvantages go to the latter. In
the name of monitoring there is control over works and employees' personal
freedom. Employees' privacy is in question since each and everything is checked
by this system. All the personal dealings and exchanges a person does in day to
day life are opened up. Most people can't have negative attitude towards
workplace. But this monitoring system may invade other interpersonal dealings
of an individual that is not directly or indirectly related to workplace or
management. There can be the environment of discrimination, domination and use
of absolute power gradually. There is no question that will be responsible in
flashing out all personal secrecy of the individual. We can't support either
side of monitoring system into to (absolutely).
Despite some
advantages and disadvantages of monitoring in the workplace my opinion is
relative regarding this? Workplace monitoring can both be advantageous to any
as well as disadvantageous one in its use. If individual privacy is not hurt and total freedom is given to all employees and misuses illegal
implications and plots against workplace are not done this will be the best
system. But it is great challenge how to create a baleen between restriction
and openness or individual privacy and welfare of workplace.
d. Write
an essay about a time in your life when you felt powerless in a difficult
situation. Use detailed descriptions to make your writing more interesting.
Have you ever been in the situation when you
just watched and felt helpless? In my case I have undergone such an experience
once. It was the event of two years back. At that time I was doing my +2 study
along with my job. Due to parents' helpless and economic situation I had to do
work from my school life.
I passed SLC in good first division
in 2060. Due to economic problem I couldn't go to city to continue my further
education. I stated to study in village's higher secondary school. Studying
only was not difficult to me. Along with
it side job was compulsory to me. I tried a lot and lastly I got a job in
teaching for primary level English. I was put in condition to get 2500 Rs.
monthly. Because of my economic crisis I had to compromise anyhow.
I was much more dutiful and punctual
at work at work. I had made all my. Students fully satisfied and confident in
my subject. That happy life couldn't last longer. After three months my
co-workers started to backbite with principal about me. Principal was
one-sided. He never tried to understand the ground reality of matter. The enemy
staff were totally against me. Though I was doing my best, all credit would go
to others. The faults done by them would be faced by me. I was not sooner. Though
they were making black to white, I couldn't do anything at all.
In the critical situation I had to be
like a statue because I couldn't give up the job due to my economic because I
couldn't give up the job due to my economic problem. Principal, slowly and
gradually, started to be angry and go against me. Due to personal jealousy and
greediness, I as well as my dear students were affected a lot. I thought and
thought but couldn't dare to take any action. Eventually, I couldn't tolerate
the in justice any longer because I was capable to do work elsewhere. I
respected my consign and gave up that job. Later, the reality was flashed out
and the principal understood the role I played in that school. That was the
situation when I felt totally helpless and speechless in critical situation due
to my personal and social problems.
